Participative leadership,
also known as democratic leadership, is a leadership style in which the leader
encourages and facilitates participation and collaboration among team members.
Here are some ways to
identify a participative leadership style in senior management at the workplace:
- The leader allows team
members to contribute with their ideas and values, and their input in the
decision-making process.
- The leader provides
opportunities for team members to be actively involved in the planning, implementation
and evaluation of projects and tasks.
- The leader fosters a culture
of collaboration and open communication, encouraging team members to work
together and share information.
- The leader is approachable
and actively listens to team members’ concerns and ideas and is responsive
to their feedback.
- The leader delegates tasks
and responsibilities to team members and provides support and resources to
help them succeed.
- The leader encourages personal and professional growth and development for team members.
Publicis Sapient Bangalore's
work culture is very similar to the above in my experience. Senior leaders of
the company create a culture of growth, innovation and open conversations. I cherished
my interaction with leaders during the 'Impact Film screening' held in the
Publicis Sapient Bangalore office in November, 2022.
Benefits of participative leadership for the team
There are several reasons why
participative leadership can be important for a team:
- Sense of ownership and commitment: When
people are involved in the decision-making process, they are more likely
to feel a sense of ownership and commitment to the decisions made and the
work being done. This increases
motivation and engagement.
- Increased innovation and creativity:
Participative leadership allows people to contribute their perspectives,
which can generate new and innovative solutions.
- Improved communication and teamwork:
Participative leadership encourages open communication and collaboration
among team members, which can improve teamwork and relationships within
the team.
- Increased job satisfaction:
When people feel that their opinions and ideas are valued, they are more
likely to be satisfied with their jobs.
- Improved decision-making: By
involving employees in the decision-making process, leaders can tap into
the knowledge and expertise of their team members, which can lead to
better decisions.
